human HST-1/FGF-4 cDNA. The minipellet was able to carry
the bioactive macromolecules even when as much as 50% (w/w)
of the atelocollagen was replaced by pharmaceutical ingredients
and/or bioactive macromolecules. This new technique of con-
trolled gene transfer using atelocollagen and allowing prolonged
systemic circulation of target products will facilitate a more ef-
fective and long-term use of naked plasmid vectors for somatic
gene therapy.
