In his almost unreadably brutal 1979 poem ‘Dichtung und Wahrheit’, Allen Curnow
ponders the role of our finer aesthetic sensibilities as we respond to horror. The
horror in question is at a far remove from the speaker: it comes from ‘a man I know
[who] wrote a book about a man he knew’, but even in mediated form retains its
power to shock:
and this man, or so he the man I knew said, fucked
and murdered a girl to save her from the others
who would have fucked and murdered this girl
much more painfully and without finer feelings,
for letting the Resistance down and herself be fucked
