BASICS OF SERIAL COMMUNICA-TIONStart and Stop
Bits
A
protocol
is a set of rules agreed by
both the sender and receiver on ¾How the data is packed¾How many bits constitute a character¾When the data begins and endsAsynchronous serial data communication is widely used for character-oriented transmissions ¾Each character is placed in between start and stop bits, this is called
framing
¾Block-oriented data transfers use the synchronous method
The start bit is always one bit, but the stop bit can be one or two bits
