depthsofmydespairitbecame clear
thatthis wasa breakthrough
tournament.Probablythemost
dramaticonefortwodecades.
Onthemen’sside,wehadthe

playerinhistory– wasnolongerat
thecrest ofhiscareer hill but

tournament wasevenmoredrama-

therearesignsofchange.The
monitorhasbeenoneofthelast
hold-outstothepinch-and-zoom
revolution,andit’staken a fresh-
facednewcomertobreaktherulesof
whata monitorisand
giveussomething
different.I’mtalking
hereabouttheHuawei
MateView,a 28inscreen
withan unconventional
3:2aspectratioanda
touch-sensitivebar
thatyouintuitivelyswipeandtap
tomakeitdoyourbidding. My
childrenwereveryimpressed.
I’mnotsuggestingthatnext
year’sLabswillseea pileof
MateViewlookalikes,butI’m
willingtobetawholefiverthat
thisistheshapeofthingstocome.
BythetimeDjokovichashungup
hisracquetin,let’ssay,threeyears’
time,clumsyonscreendisplays
withEscher-esquesubmenuswill
beathingofthepast.Thedamhas
burst,givingmanufacturerslicence
tothinkdifferent.
TheMateViewhintsatthe
possiblechangesofdirection.Ashift
toamoreuser-centricapproach,
wherewecanswitchtoaMovie
modethatgenuinelymakesa
differencetowhatwesee,andtunes
thespeakerstomatch.Perhaps,just
maybe,theywillbecomeintelligent
