QuickTime Player introduces a new picture
in picture feature which will play a video in
a resizable window, and timecode support,
transparent video support, and the option
to create an H.264, HEVC, or ProRes-encoded
movie file are all nice-to-haves out of the box.


A BUNCH OF EXTRAS


As is always the case with a macOS release,
Apple has played around under the hood
to make some changes that, on the surface
may seem insignificant, but refine the macOS
experience for existing and new users. The
System Preferences app, for example, now
features your Apple ID and profile front and
center, and allows for account management on
the Mac for the first time. Previously, users had
to navigate to iCloud.com to make changes.


Screen Time has also joined the Mac with macOS
Catalina. Screen Time, now available on all of
Apple’s platforms, lets you get a picture of how
much you’re using your Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
With Downtime and App Limits, you can set
limits with combinations of app categories,
specific apps, or websites, whilst a “One More
Minute” feature offers another 60 seconds
to end a game, save your project, or end a
conversation before signing you out.


Accessibility takes a major step forward in
macOS Catalina, too, introducing the ability
to control your Mac using your voice via Siri
commands. Voice Control’s audio-to-text
transcription can be used for dictation purposes,
