Explanation The first five herbs constitute the Bai Hu Jia Gui Zhi Tang which clears
Heat and expels Wind.
Cang Zhu and Yi Yi Ren were added to drain Dampness. Yi Yi Ren
also has the function of clearing Heat via urination.
Fang Feng was added to expel Wind and resolve Dampness.
These herbs were given as a decoction diluted in water in small doses
throughout the day. After two months of taking this decoction with
slight variations, all her pain and swelling went.
Chronic Painful Obstruction Syndrome
The above prescriptions are for the acute or semi-acute cases of Painful Obstruction Syndrome.
The majority of cases we see in practice are chronic and therefore both channels and internal
organs are involved. Several internal conditions may either derive from or accompany invasion
of the channels by Wind-Cold-Dampness. The factors contributing to chronic Painful
Obstruction Syndrome are summarized in Figure 23.2(455).
