Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis macrocephalae and Huang Qi Radix
Astragali membranacei were added to tonify Spleen-Qi. After three
courses of this prescription, a variation of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang
Tonifying the Centre and Benefiting Qi Decoction was used with the
addition of Ze Xie Rhizoma Alismatis orientalis, Yi Yi Ren Semen
Coicis lachryma jobi and Sha Ren Fructus seu Semen Amomi to
continue to drain Dampness.
Case History 25.3
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: Damp-Heat-Male, Age 33
A 33-year-old man had suffered from exhaustion for the previous 4 years. He felt especially tired
after eating, he sweated at night and his limbs felt heavy, tired and achy. He also experienced
dull headaches when tired. His tongue was Red, Swollen and had a sticky-yellow coating (Plate
25.1(509)). His pulse was Weak but Slippery and slightly Rapid. All these symptoms had started
after a bout of influenza 4 years previously from which he had never recovered.
Diagnosis This is again a condition of Damp-Heat. In this case Heat is
predominant as evidenced by the Red tongue.
Treatment principle The treatment principle adopted was to clear Heat and resolve
Dampness.
Herbal treatment Again a variation of Lian Po Yin Copits-Magnolia Decoction was used.
Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 4 g
Hou Po Cortex Magnoliae officinalis 4 g
Shi Chang Pu Rhizoma Acori graminei 4 g
Zhi Zi Fructus Gardeniae jasminoidis 6 g

Bai Zhu and Huang Qi were added to tonify Qi as his pulse was weak.
