Explanation
- Shi Gao and Zhi Mu clear Stomach-Heat.
- Shu Di and Mai Dong prevent injury of Yin from Heat.
- Niu Xi attracts Heat downwards. It also has the function of attracting Blood downwards
to stop bleeding from the gums, a sign which this formula is designed to treat.
Variations
- To harmonize Blood (stop bleeding, eliminate stasis, calm and nourish Blood) add Di Yu
Radix Sanguisorbae officinalis, San Qi Radix Notoginseng and Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae
albae. There is no need to add any herb to nourish Blood as the formula already contains
Shu Di Huang. - To astringe add Lian Zi Semen Nelumbinis nuciferae.
- To treat Qi: there is no need to add any herb for Qi as the formula contains Niu Xi which
attracts Blood downwards. - If Stomach-Heat has turned into Stomach-Fire manifesting with constipation, dry stools,
abdominal pain and mental restlessness add Da Huang Rhizoma Rhei.
