Nodus Nelumbinis nuciferae rhizomatis, San Qi Radix Notoginseng and Bai Shao Radix
Paeoniae albae. There is no need to add any herb to nourish Blood as the formula already
contains Dang Gui.


  • To astringe add Lian Zi Semen Nelumbinis nuciferae.

  • To treat Qi: there is no need to add any herb for this as the formula contains Huang Qi
    and Ren Shen.

Explanation


This pill, already mentioned in this chapter, is suitable to treat the Root in bleeding from
Spleen-Qi not holding Blood.


The tongue presentation appropriate to this remedy is a Pale and Thin body.


Prognosis and Prevention


Both acupuncture and herbs are effective in treating bleeding, although herbal medicine is
slightly more so.


Acute bleeding can be stopped very effectively with a combination of acupuncture and herbal
medicine. The patent remedy YUNNAN BAI YAO Yunnan White Medicine (containing San Qi
Radix Notoginseng and other undisclosed ingredients) is very effective in stopping acute
bleeding. In very severe bleeding, the small red pill contained inside the bottle of Yunnan Bai
Yao should be taken.


Chronic bleeding is probably better treated with herbs and also responds to treatment well.


As for prevention, two things are particularly important for any patient who has been cured of
bleeding. The first is to avoid the excessive consumption of hot-energy foods such as lamb, beef,
spices, curry, and alcohol. This is because hot foods may create Heat in the Blood and this may
push the blood out of the vessels. This precaution applies even when the bleeding of which the
patient has been cured was of the deficient type, i.e. from Spleen-Qi not holding Blood. The
second factor to keep in mind is overwork: this depletes Yin and leads to Empty-Heat. Both the
