Explanation

This decoction simultaneously releases the Exterior and resolves Phlegm-Fluids in the Interior.

• Ma Huang and Gui Zhi release the Exterior and expel Wind-Cold.


• Xi Xin and Gan Jiang are very warm and drying and resolve Phlegm-Fluids and
  Cold-Phlegm.


• Ban Xia resolves Phlegm.


• Bai Shao and Wu Wei Zi are absorbing and are added to moderate and balance the
  scattering and drying action of the other herbs.


• Gan Cao harmonizes.

Cold on the Exterior, Heat in the Interior

Clinical Manifestations

Breathlessness, distension or pain in the chest, coarse breathing, runny nose, cough, vomiting of
sticky phlegm, feeling of heat, cold limbs, irritability, aches, thirst.

Tongue: Red, coating white or yellow.

Pulse: Slippery-Rapid.

This corresponds to the second stage of an invasion of Wind-Cold, when Wind-Cold is still on
the Exterior, but interior Heat has already formed. Alternatively, it could occur in an invasion of
Wind-Cold in a person with a pre-existing condition of interior Heat. It can therefore either be an
acute attack of breathlessness, or an acute exacerbation of chronic breathlessness precipitated by
an invasion of Wind-Cold on a background of interior Lung-Heat.
