Common Cold and Influenza: Stomach- and Spleen Damp-Heat-Male, Age

A 42-year-old man presented with acute diarrhoea with foul-smelling stools, a feeling of
heaviness, a slight temperature, a feeling of fullness of the epigastrium and poor appetite. His
pulse was Slippery and slightly Rapid and his tongue was Red with a sticky-yellow coating. I
had successfully treated this patient the year before for chronic ulcerative colitis.


Diagnosis This is a clear example of Damp-Heat in the Stomach and Intestines at
the Qi Level. He was obviously prone to this due to the previous
problem in the Intestines.


Treatment principle The treatment principle adopted was to restore the descending of
Stomach-Qi and ascending of Spleen-Qi, resolve Dampness and clear
Heat.


Herbal treatment The formula used was a variation of Lian Po Yin Coptis-Magnolia
Decoction:


Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 4 g
Hou Po Cortex Magnoliae officinalis 6 g
Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae ternatae 6 g
Lu Gen Rhizoma Phragmitis communis 6 g
Zhi Zi Fructus Gardeniae jasminoidis 4 g
Dan Dou Chi Semen Sojae praeparatum 6 g
Shi Chang Pu Rhizoma Acori graminei 6 g
Qin Pi Cortex Fraxini 6 g
Bai Tou Weng Radix Pulsatillae chinensis 6 g
Huang Bo Cortex Phellodendri 6 g
Ge Gen Radix Puerariae 6 g
Shan Zha Fructus Crataegi 6 g
Shen Qu Massa Fermentata Medicinalis 6 g
Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 3 g

Explanation The first seven herbs constitute the Lian Po Yin which resolves
Damp-Heat from Stomach and Spleen.
