of the chest. They are the minister herbs and, together with the emperor herb, treat
"Fullness above".
- Rou Gui warms the Kidneys, expels Cold, stimulates the Kidney grasping of Qi and
therefore calms breathlessness. - Dang Gui nourishes the Blood and tonifies the Liver. Together with Rou Gui, which
tonifies the Kidneys, it tonifies the "Emptiness below". It also stops cough and subdues
rebellious Qi. - Sheng Jiang and Su Ye are the assistant herbs and they scatter Cold and hlep to calm
breathlessness by subduing rebellious Qi. - Zhi Gan Cao and Da Zao, messenger herbs, harmonize the Middle.
This prescription differs from the previous two in that it deals with both the "Emptiness below"
and the "Fullness above". It is therefore better indicated when there is pronounced fullness of the
chest with expectoration of white phlegm and cough. It deals with both the Manifestation
(accumulation of Qi in the Lungs) and the Root (deficiency of the Kidneys).
Variations
- If Qi rebels upwards and there is a feeling of movement under the umbilicus, add Chen
Xiang Lignum Aquilariae.
