Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae ternatae 15 g
Chen Pi Pericarpium Citri reticulatae 15 g
Fu Ling Sclerotium Poriae cocos 9 g
Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 5 g
Sheng Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis recens 3 g
Wu Mei Fructus Pruni mume 1 prune
Su Zi Fructus Perillae frutescentis 9 g
Bai Jie Zi Semen Sinapis albae 6 g
Lai Fu Zi Semen Raphani sativi 9 g
Explanation
- The Er Chen Tang is used to resolve Damp-Phlegm. Damp-Phlegm is characterized by
profuse-sticky sputum and a feeling of oppression and heaviness of the chest. - The formula San Zi Yang Qin Tang is used to resolve Cold Phlegm accompanied by
retention of food. Cold Phlegm is characterized by watery-white sputum and a
pronounced feeling of cold. Su Zi within this formula also restores the descending of
Lung-Qi and stops cough.
This pattern nearly always occurs on a background of Spleen-Qi or Spleen-Yang deficiency. In
such cases, it is necessary to add some Spleen tonics such as Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis
macrocephalae and, if there is Spleen-Yang deficiency, Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis
officinalis.
Variations
- To enhance the antitussive effect add Kuan Dong Hua Flos Tussilaginis farfarae and
Xing Ren Semen Pruni armeniacae. - In cases of pronounced Dampness add Cang Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis lanceae and Hou
Po Cortex Magnoliae officinalis.
