Explanation

• Gui Zhi and Gan Cao warm and tonify the Heart. Gan Cao in a high dose such as this
  strengthens the Middle Burner and harmonizes the ascending of Yang and descending of
  Yin in the Middle Burner.


• Long Gu and Mu Li sink and calm the Mind. Mu Li also nourishes Kidney-Yin and
  strengthens Will-Power. These two substances also help timidity. Being astringent, on a
  physical level they stop sweating, whilst on a mental level they "absorb" the Mind and
  the Ethereal Soul into the Yin.

This formula nourishes the Kidneys, strengthens the Heart, calms the Mind, settles the Ethereal
Soul and bolsters Will-Power. The main manifestations are palpitations, mental restlessness,
propensity to be startled, sweating, cold limbs and a Pale tongue.

Although it contains Mu Li which primarily strengthens Kidney-Yin, this formula can be
adapted to treat both Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang deficiency. In fact, its primary aim is to
strengthen Heart-Yang with Gui Zhi and Zhi Gan Cao (hence the Pale tongue) and calm the
