Explanation
This prescription nourishes Kidney- and Heart-Yin.
- Sheng Di, Xuan Shen, Mai Dong and Tian Dong nourish Kidney- and Heart-Yin.
- Ren Shen and Fu Ling tonify Heart-Qi to help to nourish Heart-Yin. Fu Ling also calms
the Mind. - Wu Wei Zi is sour and absorbing and it helps to nourish Yin. It also calms the Mind.
- Dang Gui and Dan Shen harmonize Heart-Blood to help to nourish Yin. Dan Shen is
also used as a messenger to enter the Heart channel. - Bai Zi Ren, Suan Zao Ren and Yuan Zhi nourish the Heart and calm the Mind. Suan
Zao Ren and Yuan Zhi combine well as the former is sour and absorbing while the latter
is pungent and scattering. The combination of these two tastes and actions harmonizes
the Heart and calms the Mind. - Jie Geng is used as a messenger to direct the herbs to the Upper Burner.
Variations
- To enhance the sleep-promoting effect add Ye Jiao Teng Caulis Polygoni multiflori.
- If there are pronounced symptoms of Empty-Heat add Mu Li Concha Ostreae and Qing
Hao Herba Artemisiae apiaceae.
