and cold. One scatters, the other nourishes (Yin). Chuan Xiong is also coordinated with
Suan Zao Ren: the former is pungent, the latter sour and both enter the Liver. Together
they harmonize the Liver.


  • Fu Ling calms the Mind.

  • Gan Cao is sweet and together with Suan Zao Ren which is sour, nourishes Yin and
    moistens.


Variations



  • If there is Empty-Heat arising from Liver-Yin deficiency add Han Lian Cao Herba
    Ecliptae prostratae and Mu Li Concha Ostreae.

  • If there are symptoms of Liver-Yang rising add Tian Ma Rhizoma Gastrodiae elatae and
    Gou Teng Ramulus Uncariae.

Explanation


This formula, already explained in Chapter 9, is specific to nourish Liver-Yin and promote sleep
by rooting the Ethereal Soul in the Liver. Compared to the previous formula, it is used when the
person has many unpleasant dreams.
