- Bo He and Chai Hu eliminate stagnation of Liver-Qi. Although Chai Hu is, strictly
speaking, contraindicated in headaches, the overall effect of the formula is such that it
can be used for headaches from Liver-Qi stagnation, especially with the addition of other
herbs which make Qi descend, such as Cheng Xiang Lignum Aquilariae. - Dang Gui and Bai Shao nourish Liver-Blood, which will contribute to the pacifying of
Liver-Qi. In addition, Bai Shao also pacifies and harmonizes the Liver. - Bai Zhu and Fu Ling tonify Spleen-Qi and eliminate Dampness.
- Gan Cao and Sheng Jiang harmonize.
Herbs
- Mu Xiang Radix Saussureae moves Qi in the Stomach, Spleen, Intestines and
Gall-Bladder. Because it enters the Gall-Bladder it can relieve headaches from Liver-Qi
stagnation. - Ju Hua Flos Chrysanthemi morifolii subdues Liver-Yang and can be added as a
symptomatic herb to relieve the headache. - Sang Ye Folium Mori albae has the same function as Ju Hua.
- Zhi Shi Fructus Citri aurantii immaturus moves Qi and makes Qi descend. For this
reason it is a suitable addition to treat headaches from Liver-Qi stagnation. - Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis yanhusuo moves Qi and Blood of Stomach and Liver
and is particularly good for stopping pain. - Chen Xiang Lignum Aquilariae moves Qi and has a strong effect in subduing rebellious
Qi. For this reason, it is suitable to treat headaches.
