- Gua Lou resolves Phlegm and opens the chest.
- Xie Bai invigorates Yang in the chest.
- Ban Xia resolves Phlegm and subdues rebellious Qi.
- White rice wine invigorates Yang and dispels Cold Phlegm.
Variations
- In case of symptoms of Phlegm obstructing the head, such as pronounced dizziness, a
feeling of muzziness of the head and blurred vision, add Shi Chang Pu Rhizoma Acori
graminei and Yu Jin Tuber Curcumae to open the orifices. - If there is a pronounced feeling of fullness and oppression of the chest add Hou Po
Cortex Magnoliae officinalis. - For copious expectoration of phlegm add Dan Nan Xing Rhizoma Arisaematis
praeparata. - For pronounced pain in the chest add Dan Shen Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae.
- If Phlegm is combined with some stasis of Blood one can use the following variation of
the above prescription:

CHI SHAO Radix Paeoniae rubrae 6 g

CHUAN XIONG Radix Ligustici wallichii 6 g
JIANG HUANG Rhizoma Curcumae longae 6 g
Explanation
The last four herbs move Blood. Jiang Huang Rhizoma Curcumae longae, in particular, moves
Qi and Blood in the shoulder area and is therefore used when the pain extends to this area.
