(Alpinia-Cyperus Pill)
Gao Liang Jiang Rhizoma Alpiniae officinari 6 g
Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi rotundi 10 g
Explanation
This is a simple formula to scatter Cold and warm the Stomach which is used in more severe
cases.
- Gao Liang Jiang warms the Stomach and dispels Cold.
- Xiang Fu moves Qi and stops pain. Its moving-Qi action will help to expel Cold and also
to relax the contraction caused by Cold.
Variations
- In case of very severe symptoms of Cold, such as intense pain and spitting of clear fluid,
add Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis 3 g and Wu Zhu Yu Fructus Evodiae
rutaecarpae 1.5 g. Both these herbs are very hot and pungent and should be used for
short periods only. They should be stopped when thirst appears and spitting of thin fluid
stops. - If there are symptoms of stagnation of Qi, such as pronounced distension, add Chen Pi
Pericarpium Citri reticulatae and Mu Xiang Radix Saussureae. - If there are exterior symptoms such as a temperature and chilliness, add the formula
Xiang Su San Cyperus-Perilla Powder which contains Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi
rotundi, Zi Su Ye Folium Perillae frutescentis, Chen Pi Pericarpium Citri reticulatae and
Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis. - If there is a pronounced feeling of oppression of the epigastrium, no appetite, belching
and vomiting add Zhi Shi Fructus Citri aurantii immaturus, Shen Qu Massa Fermentata
Medicinalis, Ji Nei Jin Endothelium Corneum Gigeraiae Galli, Ban Xia Rhizoma
Pinelliae ternatae and Sheng Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis recens.
