Huang Qi Radix Astragali membranacei 9 g

Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae albae 18 g

Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis praeparata 6 g

Sheng Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis recens 10 g

Da Zao Fructus Ziziphi jujubae 12 dates

Yi Tang Saccharum granorum 30 g

Explanation

This formula is a variation of Xiao Jian Zhong Tang Minor Strengthening the Centre Decoction,
in itself a variation of Gui Zhi Tang Ramulus Cinnamomi Decoction, with the addition of Yi
Tang and the doubling of Bai Shao's dosage. Xiao Jian Zhong Tang Minor Strengthening the
Centre Decoction warms the Middle, scatters Cold and stops pain. In it, Yi Tang Saccharum
granorum strengthens the Stomach and Spleen, Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae albae stops pain and
Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi cassiae warms the Middle and scatters Cold. Sheng Jiang Rhizoma
Zingiberis officinalis recens and Da Zao Fructus Ziziphi jujubae warm the Middle and pacify the
Stomach. The addition of Huang Qi Radix Astragali membranacei reinforces this formula's
action in strengthening the Spleen.

Variations

• If there is sour regurgitation add Wu Zhu Yu Fructus Evodiae rutaecarpae and Wu Zei
  Gu Os Sepiae and remove or reduce Yi Tang Saccharum granorum.


• In case of vomiting of thin fluids add Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis, Chen Pi
  Pericarpium Citri reticulatae, Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae ternatae and Fu Ling
  Sclerotium Poriae cocos to warm the Stomach and resolve fluids.


• If there are pronounced symptoms of Cold such as vomiting of fluids, very cold limbs
  and very Pale tongue add the formula Da Jian Zhong Tang Major Strengthening the
  Centre Decoction which contains Chuan Jiao Fructus Zanthoxyli bungeani, Gan Jiang
  Rhizoma Zingiberis officinalis, Ren Shen Radix Ginseng and Yi Tang Saccharum
  granorum. This formula strongly warms the Middle, tonifies Stomach and Spleen,
  subdues rebellious Qi and stops pain. It is used for severe Stomach and Spleen Yang
  deficiency with accumulation of Cold and fluids in the stomach causing epigastric pain.
  Instead of this formula, either Li Zhong Wan Regulating the Centre Pill or Liang Fu Wan
  Alpinia-Cyperus Pill can be used.
