The tongue presentation appropriate to this remedy is a Pale, Swollen and wet body.
Case History 22.1
Oedema: Kidney-Yang Deficiency-Female Age 52
A 52-year-old woman had been suffering from oedema of the ankles for 2 years. She also
suffered from early-morning diarrhoea and she felt always cold. Her tongue was Pale and wet
and her pulse was Deep and Weak.
Diagnosis This is oedema from Kidney-Yang deficiency which is also confirmed
by the early-morning diarrhoea and the cold feeling.
Treatment principle The treatment principle adopted was to tonify Spleen-and Kidney-Yang
and resolve oedema. She was treated only with acupuncture.
Acupuncture The points used (with reinforcing method to tonify Spleen and Kidneys
and even method to resolve oedema) were selected from the following:
ST-36 Zusanli, SP-6 Sanyinjiao, BL-20 Pishu and BL-21 Weishu to
tonify Spleen and Stomach. According to chapter 35 of the "Spiritual
Axis" ST-36 should always be used in oedema as it encourages the
return of fluids from the space between skin and muscles into the

BL-23 Shenshu and KI-7 Fuliu to tonify Kidney-Yang.
BL-22 Sanjiaoshu, Ren-9 Shuifen, SP-9 Yinlingquan and SP-6
Sanyinjiao to drain Dampness and resolve oedema.
This patient was treated weekly for the first 3 months and fortnightly
thereafter; it took 12 months to resolve the oedema completely.

Oedema: Kidney-Yang Deficiency-Female, Age 48
A 48-year-old woman had been suffering from oedema of the lower legs from the age of 15. She
had been taking Moduretic (a diuretic) for 12 years. She felt cold in general but often had a
burning feeling in her feet. Her urine was sometimes dark. She also suffered from lower
backache and loose stools. Her tongue was slightly Red and Stiff. Her pulse was very Fine and
extremely Weak on both Rear positions.
Diagnosis This case is interesting as there are some signs of Kidney-Yin
