Young Scots rounding into form at the net

The first of three OK Red
Conference Round Robin
evenings starts for the
Caledonia varsity volleyball
team Wednesday at West
Ottawa Hill School.
The Fighting Scots will be
there with the host Panthers,
who they just defeated in an
OK Red Conference match
in Caledonia Thursday eve-
ning, and the Rockford
Rams.
Caledonia head coach Val
Lurye said she feels like here
team is in a good place right
now heading into a second
chance against the toughest
volleyball conferences in the
state of Michigan.
“While it’s been tough to
go 1-6 the first round of con-
ference, after seeing what we
are capable of on Saturday
[at the Lakewood
Invitational], I see the confi-
dence building and the trust
on the court coming together.
Our core group of leaders,
Avery [Palmateer], Ella
[Moorlag] and Paige
[Williamson] are all in.
They’ve embraced our three
freshmen, and fully support
them on and off the court and
that has made a big differ-
ence in the way we are play-
ing.
“Since Saturday, when we
made the change to our line-
up, we have increased our
points per set from 12.91 to
15.62, that has made a big
difference. We are very
excited to get another chance
at every team in conference
play and that will be our
focus this next week.”

Caledonia won three of its
five matches at the Lakewood
Invitational Saturday, with
the only two defeats coming
against Forest Hills Northern
in pool play and then in the
championship finals.
The Huskies scored a
25-16, 25-17 win over the
Fighting Scots in the cham-
pionship game after
Caledonia scored a 28-26,
21-25, 16-14 win over
Lowell in the championship
semifinals.
Caledonia also took a 2-
win over Okemos and a 2-
win over Montague in Pool
Play. Forest Hills Northern
bested the Scots in their pool
play meeting 2-0.
Palmateer had 111 assists
and six aces throughout the
day, putting up 9.25 assists

per set. Moorlag had 41
kills and 31 digs and
Williamson had a team-
high 80 digs.
Caledonia finished off the
first half of the OK Red
Conference season this week,
putting up a fight in a 25-23,
16-25, 25-22, 30-28 loss to
visiting West Ottawa
Thursday after a tough five-
set loss at Jenison Tuesday
evening.
Lurye said Thursday
night’s match was a huge
confidence booster for
Georgia Pennington, one of
the Scots’ freshmen middle
blockers. Pennington had ten
kills, three aces and four
blocks in the match.
“She was the last piece we
needed to have a really awe-
some game, and that hap-

pened last night,” Lurye said.
“I take that as a big win on
the night despite the tough
loss, especially given how
close the sets were.”
Tuesday at Jenison the
Scots were bested 25-23,
25-23, 20-25, 17-25, 15-
by the host Wildcats.
Lurye said her team’s
three freshmen, Pennington,
Josie Noble and Cambria
Gaier played exceptionally
well Tuesday. Gaier had 22
kills as well as four aces. She
hit .513 on the night.
“Player of the match in my
opinion,” Lurye said of
Gaier. “She didn’t have a
single error until set four and
only had two total on the
entire night.”
Noble had 11 kills and two
blocks and Pennington

chipped in six kills, five
blocks and five aces.
Palmateer had 46 assists
and three blocks on the night
as well.
“Our freshmen, Josie,
Cambria, and Georgia are
really starting to finally get
comfortable and are the ris-
ing stars of this week,” Lurye
said. “Avery is really trusting
them more, she’s moving the
offense around, and is taking
more risks. Having Josie on

the right side, and keeping
Georgia in the middle opens
up a lot of offensive creativi-
ty for Avery, and she is start-
ing to take advantage of it.
Ella and Paige and doing an
excellent job managing the
serve receive - often passing
only two people, and that is
really allowing Ella to just
focus on passing knowing
that Cam can take care of
things on offense wherever
she is.”
