20.2Ir a+ infinitive


This construction is used:

(a) In the present, referring to future time. Ir a+ infinitive is frequent in speech, and is
preferred for more categoric statements:
Van a viajar a España. (see 72.1)
They are going to travel to Spain.
Él nos va a ayudar.
He’s going to help us. (definitely)

(b) As the first person plural imperative:

Vamos a comer algo. (see 67.2)
Let’s eat something.

(c) To express intention:
¿Vas a venir a mi boda? (see 70.3)
Are you coming (= intending to come) to my wedding?
(d) In the imperfect, referring to future-in-the-past time:
Iban a hacer la compra. (see 72.1)
They were going to do the shopping.

20.3Llevar+ gerund


This has the meaning of spending time doing something.
Llevo mucho rato esperando/llevo esperando mucho rato. (see 71.7)
I’ve been waiting a long time.
Llevo dos horas haciendo ejercicios.
I’ve been exercising for two hours.
Alfonso llevaba seis meses esperando a su hermano.
Alfonso had been waiting six months for his brother.
