Modern Spanish Grammar: A Practical Guide

(lily) #1
To describe the weather at a particular point in time we can also use estar+ adjective:
Hoy está caluroso. Today is warm.
Ayer estuvo muy frío. It was very cold yesterday.
Estar must be used when the adjective which describes the weather is a past participle,
for example:

Hoy está nublado. Today is cloudy.
Mañana estará despejado. Tomorrow will be clear.

NOTE Estar is used with the past participle because it indicates a state of affairs (see 22.2).

To say what a day (un día) is or was like in relation to the weather, we need to use ser:

Ayer fue un día muy frío.
Yesterday it was a very cold day.
Mañana será un día de mucho calor.
Tomorrow it will be very warm.

NOTE Ser is always used with a noun or pronoun (see 22.1).

To describe the climate we use ser or tener:
El clima de Galicia es húmedo.
The climate in Galicia is wet.
Valencia tiene un clima templado.
Valencia has a temperate climate.

To ask what the weather or the climate is like, use phrases like the following:
¿Qué tal tiempo hace?
What is the weather like?
¿Cómo es el tiempo/clima?
What is the weather/climate like?
¿Hace/hacía (mucho) frío/calor?
Is/was it (very) cold/warm?
