Modern Spanish Grammar: A Practical Guide

66.2 Responding to an expression of gratitude

The way you respond to an expression of gratitude will vary according to the situation.
British people, unlike Americans, tend not to respond to a word such as ‘thank you’,
although people in service in Britain (e.g. shop assistants) seem to be using the phrase
‘you’re welcome’ more often. Spanish speakers usually say something, however brief.
The expressions used by most Spanish speakers are:¡De nada!, ¡No hay de qué!,
¡No es nada!,‘You’re welcome’. More purposeful and formal responses are No me lo
agradezca, por favor. No es nada.‘Please don’t thank me. It’s all right’. No tiene nada
que agradecerme.‘You don’t have to thank me’. No tiene por qué agradecérmelo.
‘You don’t have to thank me’.
