Candy Bar Fractions
Opportunity...............................................................................................................................
You are starting your unit on fractions and you would like to have a worksheet
that could be used to show the fractional parts of a rectangular candy bar. This
could be something that you could display to the class using the overhead or
that the students could do individually on the computer.
Solution and Overview
You will make a “candy bar” with twelve pieces so that students can have
practice with halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and twelfths. (For older students,
you may want to expand this to 24 or 36 pieces.) You or the student will type
the fraction they want to make into one of the cells. Then, they will type “X’s”
into the cells of the candy bar to make a picture of the fraction. When they
think they have the correct solution, they can type a question mark into
another cell, and Excel will display the appropriate response, depending on
whether they are right or wrong.
Creating the Solution
- Set the column width.
Begin by moving your cursor to the very top of column B. The cursor will
change to a downward pointing arrow. Left-click and drag to the right,
stopping at column G. Columns B through G should be grayed in. Now
move your cursor between columns F and G until it changes to a plus sign
with horizontal arrows. When you left-click, you will see the current column
