APPLYING YOUR KNOWLEDGE

CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
1.A child is admitted to the intensive care unit
with third-degree burns. How would your
nursing care plan differ for a child in each of
the stages listed below? Be sure to include the
type of dialog you would use to explain
painful procedures to each age group.
a.Toddler:

b.Preschooler:

c. School-aged child:

d.Adolescent:

2.No two parents are the same in their methods
of raising children. Although there aren’t
always clear-cut right or wrong ways to raise
children, some parents just seem to do a better
job of it than others. Interview some of your
friends to find out how successful they feel
their parents were in raising them. Ask them
about their parents’ methods of discipline,
motivation, and encouragement. Compare
their answers with your own thoughts about
how you were raised by your parents. What is
nursing’s role in promoting good parenting?

REFLECTIVE PRACTICE USING CRITICAL

THINKING SKILLS

Use the following expanded scenario from
Chapter 19 in your textbook to answer the
questions below.
Scenario:Patricia Leming, age 26, is in the first
trimester of pregnancy. At a clinic visit, she
says, “I’ve been trying to cut back on smoking
and drinking alcohol, but I haven’t had much
success.” Upon assessment, the nurse notes
that Ms. Leming appears nervous and slightly
underweight. Ms. Leming also states that she
hasn’t had much of an appetite since she’s been
pregnant. She tells the nurse, “My boyfriend
was furious when he found out I was pregnant,
and he wants nothing to do with the baby.”
1.What should be the focus of the nursing care
plan developed for Ms. Leming?

2.What would be a successful outcome for this
patient?

3.What intellectual, technical, interpersonal,
and/or ethical/legal competencies are most
likely to bring about the desired outcome?

4.What resources might be helpful for
Ms. Leming?
