In other words, the difference is a gauge transformation that moves the Dirac string from
one location to another. Wu and Yang gave an interpretation of thisconstruction in terms of
fiber bundles. In particular, the Dirac magnetic monopole construction is closely related to
the Hopf fibration ofS^2 by a circleS^1 giving total spaceS^3. Coincidentally, Dirac invented
the magnetic monopole in exactly the same year as Hopf did his work onfiber bundles. It
took about 40 years before the connection between these two problems was understood.
