Oklahoma State gives

Gundy an extension

Oklahoma State football coach
Mike G undy agreed to a new
perpetual five-year contract that
will keep him at h is alma mater
indefinitely, the school
announced Friday.
The contract extension comes
a year after a high-profile
incident that resulted in Gundy’s
contract being shortened a nd his
salary reduced. G undy sparked
controversy i n June 2020 when a
photo s urfaced on social media
showing the coach wearing a
T -shirt with a One America News
(OAN) logo on it. OAN is a far-
right television network that
promotes conspiracy theories
and called the Black Lives Matter
movement “a farce” and a
“criminal front group.”
In r esponse, star running back
Chuba Hubbard , now a member
of the Carolina Panthers,
threatened t o boycott campus
events until c hanges were made.

Kevin Durant had 29 points,
15 rebounds and 12 assists, James
Harden scored 20 points, and the
Brooklyn Nets closed with a 16-1
run to beat the Philadelphia 76ers,
114-109, on Friday night as each
team played without a much-dis-
cussed star guard.
Kyrie Irving was sidelined for
the Nets because of his refusal to
get a coronavirus vaccine. Ben
Simmons sat out the 76ers’ home
opener for personal reasons, and
Philadelphia does not know when
the three-time all-star will return.
Brooklyn did not lead or tie
until LaMarcus Aldridge’s and-
one dunk with 48 seconds to go
made it 108-all. He sank the free
throw for the one-point lead.

Durant hit two free throws with
14 seconds left to seal the Nets’
comeback from a 14-point deficit.
Philadelphia’s Tobias Harris
and Seth Curry each had
23 points, while Joel Embiid
scored 19 on a sore right knee.
l RAPTORS 115, CELTICS 83:
Scottie Barnes had 25 points and
13 rebounds, Gary Tr ent Jr. scored
12 of his 20 points in the third
quarter, and Toronto poured it on
to spoil Boston’s h ome opener.
Precious Achiuwa had 15 points
and 15 rebounds and Fred Van -
Vleet had 11 points and nine as-
sists for the Raptors.
In Celtics Coach Ime Udoka’s
home debut, Jayson Tatum scored
18 points and Al Horford returned
for a second stint with the Celtics
to add 11 points and 11 rebounds.
l KNICKS 121, MAGIC 96: J u-
lius Randle had 21 points, 10 re-
bounds and seven assists, and
New York improved to 2-0 for the
first time since the 2012-13 season

with a road rout of Orlando.
The Knicks made a fra-
nchise-record 24 three-pointers
against the rebuilding Magic.
l NUGGETS 102, SPURS 96:
Nikola Jokic had 28 points and
16 rebounds and overcame six
turnovers to lead Denver past San
Antonio at h ome.
Jokic w as serenaded with
“MVP!” chants when he hit a fade-
away jumper that gave the Nug-
gets a 100-93 lead with 1:32 to go.
l BULLS 128, PELICANS 112:
Zach LaVine scored 32 points, De-
Mar DeRozan added 26, and Chi-
cago delighted its home fans with
an easy victory over New Orleans.
The Bulls’ Lonzo Ball added a
triple-double with 17 p oints, 10 re-
bounds and 10 assists against his
former team.
l ROCKETS 124, THUNDER
91: Christian Wood had 31 points
and 14 rebounds to help Houston
win its home opener over Okla-
homa City.

l HORNETS 123, CAVA-
LIERS 112: Miles Bridges scored
30 points, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 25,
and Charlotte took advantage of
Cleveland’s sloppiness to pull
away l ate on the road.

Suns defend team culture
The Phoenix Suns released a
statement regarding a potential
media investigation into their
workplace culture, denying that
the organization or owner Robert
Sarver has a history of racism or
sexism.
The statement said the Suns
are aware that ESPN is working
on a story accusing the organiza-
tion of misconduct on a “variety o f
topics.” The statement said these
were “completely baseless claims”
and that “documentary evidence
in our possession and eyewitness
accounts directly contradict the
reporter’s a ccusations, and we are
preparing our response to his
questions.”

Dinwiddie then set up Bertans
with 35 seconds left in overtime,
driving and kicking the ball back
out t o the sharpshooter, who need-
ed just a second to get in position
before hitting a huge three to put
the Wizards up 134 -131. Kuzma
then put the game out of reach at
the free throw line with six sec-
onds to play.
Dinwiddie finished with a
team-high 34 points, shooting
6 for 9 from beyond the arc.

Beal expected back Monday
Unseld anticipates Beal will
play Monday when the Wizards
travel to Brooklyn to face Kevin
Durant, James Harden and the
Nets despite the h ip contusion.
“I don’t foresee any residual ef-
fects. It just seemed like it was a
pain threshold at this point, little
bit o f mobility,” Unseld said before
the game. “But beyond that there
was nothing structural or any-
thing w orrisome.”

Bertans provides a boost
Bertans’s performance gave
Wizards fans reason to hope that
last year’s shooting woes were a
fluke. Bertans turned in h is lowest
career field goal percentage last
season (40.4 percent) and his sec-
ond-lowest mark f rom beyond the
arc (39.5) after missing most of
training camp because of visa is-
sues, contracting the coronavirus
and injuring his calf late in the
season.
In the home opener, Bertans
flaunted the shooting form that
earned him an $85 million con-
tract in Washington.
The Latvian erupted for
11 points in nine minutes off the
bench in the first half a nd sparked
a 13-0 r un t hat helped the Wizards
regain momentum in the second
quarter. He also showed off a few
new moves, including a dunk in
the first quarter. His second at-
tempt getting to the rim was un-
successful, but he is clearly more
comfortable testing the limits of
his skill set this season, part of
which has to do with his connec-
tion with Dinwiddie as a passer.
“He has a really quick first step,
he can get to the rim, and that’s t he
moment where the defense has to
collapse, and that’s the type of
game that I enjoy, a ctually, moving
around and finding the open spot,”
Bertans said of the point guard.

His message to his players ahead
of the game was simple: Even with-
out Beal, they had enough to win.
They p roved him right.
Holiday (seven points in
25 minutes) did a satisfactory job
filling in, and the rest of the Wiz-
ards proved they could keep up
with ease i n a shootout even with-
out t heir star guard. Davis B ertans
(17 points) and Kyle Kuzma (26)
got hot at the right moments, and
Montrezl Harrell again anchored
the d efense w ith e nergy and confi-
dence that won over the crowd in
Washington and earned him
“ M-V-P” chants in his first home
game as a Wizard.
But it was point guard Spencer
Dinwiddie’s offense and orches-
tration down the stretch that
helped Washington (2-0) seal the
win.
“Everyone made big plays, ev-
eryone h ad a stretch. [Bertans] got
it going early, obviously Spencer
late, Tr ez had a stretch, Kuz had a
stretch. So it was good to see; it
wasn’t reliant on one person,” Un-
seld said. “Obviously, we’re miss-
ing a big piece of our offense to-
night, but next-man-up mentality.

... It’s a gutsy win. It wasn’t per-
fect by any means, but we’ll take
it.”
Here is what you need to know
from Friday’s victory:

Dinwiddie comes up big
With four Wizards stacked on
one side of the court and 34 sec-
onds remaining, Dinwiddie took
the ball to the top of the key and
nailed a game-tying three-pointer
from 28 feet t o force o vertime. The
play was even more impressive
considering Dinwiddie’s greatest
talent is getting to the rim — as
NBA.com’s John Schuhmann
pointed out, the guard was 2 for 2 4
on clutch three-pointers in his last
fully healthy season.
Dinwiddie said of his reputa-
tion as not exactly a clutch three-
point shooter: “Look, I get it, I’m
not the sexiest name, nor do I
[pretend to be] Dame [Lillard] or
Steph [Curry] or none of those
guys. But those things h appen; the
proof is in the pudding. Like,
game-winning shots, w e can go o n
YouTube and look at mine. And if
Brad’s out, I probably will be the
one taking those most times, I
would say. And if Brad’s in, then
that’s his s hot t o take or his play to
make.
“So you just understand what’s

largely bereft o f defense.

Holiday earns the start
Unseld s et t he stage for a family
feud in starting Aaron Holiday —
against his former team — in
Beal’s p lace. Holiday’s older broth-
er Justin started for t he Pacers.
The 6-foot point guard spent
his first three years in the league
with Indiana, and his familiarity
with his old franchise showed
when he scored the first points of
the game. Playing alongside Din-
widdie as the two-guard in the
starting lineup, Holiday resumed
his normal duties as floor general
when he played with the second
unit next to Neto, Deni Avdija,
Kuzma and Harrell.
Rookie Corey Kispert also
cracked the lineup with Beal out,
making his NBA debut. He also
stepped up to fill in for Beal and
give the customary pre-home
opener address to the crowd at
Capital O ne Arena.
