Therefore the Qur'an allows beating one's wife as the final stage of
punishment.Intheeventofunreasonablebehaviourofawomanwithre-
gardtothesexualdesiresofherhusband.Thefirststageisgivingadvice.
Secondly, the man should avoid sharing her bed or turn his back to-
wardsher,andinthiswayheshouldshowhisanger.Ifnothingpositive
happensattheendofthesecondstageandstillthewomancontinuesto
refuse her husband. He is permitted to beat her (lightly).


Aman,however,isnotpermittedtosurpasstheprescribedlimitand
resort to oppression. Men are reminded of the following:


(a)Theaim ofphysicalpunishmentof one'swifeshouldbeawayof
education and not that of taking revenge.
(b) Hitting should be done by hand or by using a thin and light
wooden stick.
(c)Hittingtotheextentthatresultsinchangingthecolouroftheskin
(toblueorred) isnot permittedandispunishablebythepaymentofa
Diyah (fine).
(d)Hittingofsensitivepartsofthebodysuchastheeyes,head,stom-
ach. etc is not permitted.
(e)Physicalpunishmentshouldnotbesohardastocreatehatredand
ill-feeling between the couple, or to drive the wife towards more
disobedience.
(f)Aman(whointendstopunishhiswifeinthismanner)shouldre-
memberthatheistolivewith hiswifeandthatthe familylove should
not be destroyed.
(g)Amanisnotallowedtohithiswifeiftherearelegitimatereasons
forhernon-compliancewithhiswishes.Forinstance,ifsheisinthestate
ofmenstruation,fastinginthemonthofRamadhan,beinginihram(garb
forHajjpilgrimage),orifsheissick.Theseareacceptablereasonsanda
mancannotpunishhiswifefornotcomplyingwithhiswishesonthese
occasions.


Case 2:A woman can go out of the house only after obtaining her
husband'spermission.Goingoutwithoutpermissionislawfullynot al-
lowedandcommittingitisasin.Atraditionhasbeenreportedthatthe
Prophet(SA)didnotallowanywomantogooutofher housewithout
herhusband'spermission.'Hestated;'Anywomanwhogoesoutofher
house without her husband's permission, would be subjected to the
