IN MEMORIAM

Youmatriculate at Smith College (“Not a
girls’ school without men, butawomen's
college without boys”) and you enroll in
Howard University when illness forces you
to come back home.Smiles from you make
children feel safe, make teens confident, and
make the elderly remember happiness.Your
life of service,kindness,and compassion
continues in death through your organ and
tissue donations. What does all this really
mean? Not much on most days during the
throes of anguish and helplessness.Today
it means everything.Paradoxically,wecan
never numb the searing pain of our loss;
we can, however, bejubilant in our Joy on
October 25.Today we laugh with you and
speak out loud to you without caring who
hears us; "Admiral" Christopher does his
happy dance; and Daddy wakes up and hugs
us all.Weare having your birthday party in
our shared heart, mind, and soul. There are
bright helium-filled balloons and flowers in
the foyer;afour-layer carrot cake is on the
dining room table; your birthday banner is in
the family room; and you look chic wearing
your velvet, multicolored-birthday candle hat.
Weshare and celebrate our wonderful news
together.Your face lights up and this is
what real Joy feels and looks like.Real Joy
onceayear is enough and must be enough.
Pulsating pain returns in the morning. On
October 25, Real Joy is resurrected. Some-
thing special surrounds us today.Sweetness,
effervescent lightness,goodness,and joy-
fulness reign today.You are Love,Beauty,
Peace,Happiness,Laughter,Joy,Kindness,
and Hope. You are here with us,but you
can't stay. The floods of grief will come at
day’send when we will remember that we
have witnessed eighteen years without you
and four without your Daddy.Wecan survive
because we have also had one day in each
of those years to relive Real Joy.Wewill
embrace Real Joy again next October 25.We
love and adore you from infinity to beyond,
your parents (Cecil andTownsend), Aunt
Antoine,Christopher,and his wifeKemah
