Of all Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s
miserable moments as Man-
chester United manager, losing
5-0 to Liverpool in the English
Premier League felt the lowest.
Especially when it came Sun-
day at Old Trafford against Unit-
ed’s greatest rival in a season in
which the team should be chal-
lenging for the title after so much
more spending.
“This is the worst feeling,” Sol-
skjaer said. “You feel rock bottom.”
Maybe all that is keeping Solsk-
jaer in the job is the lack of chants
aimed at him by United’s fans.
There were enough of those being
directed his way by the visiting
Liverpool fans, gloating as the
goals flowed from the fifth min-
ute.
The rout was begun by Naby
Keita, and the porous United de-
fense allowed Diogo Jota to score
again in the 13th minute. Mo-
hamed Salah picked up the scor-
ing with two before halftime, giv-
ing him goals in 10 consecutive
games for Liverpool. The for-
ward’s hat trick was completed
five minutes into the second half.
Liverpool remains the league’s
last unbeaten team....
Michail Antonio took advan-
tage of Harry Kane’s defensive
inadequacies to lead West Ham to
a 1-0 win at home against Totten-
ham....
Youri Tielemans and James
Maddison both scored in Leices-
ter City’s 2-1 victory at Brentford.
l SPAIN: David Alaba and Lu-
cas Vázquez scored as visiting
Real Madrid beat Barcelona, 2-1,
at Camp Nou in the rivals’ first La
Liga clash since the exit of Lionel
Messi.
Defender Alaba turned goal
scorer in the 32nd minute with a
wonderful curling shot from the
left side of the area that the out-
stretched Marc-Andre ter Stegen
could not stop.
Vázquez added a second goal in
stoppage time on a counterattack
with Barcelona desperately
thrown forward in search of an
equalizer.
Sergio Agüero pulled one back
for Barcelona in the game’s final
seconds....
Real Sociedad drew, 2-2, with
Atlético Madrid. Former Barce-
lona striker Luis Suárez scored
both goals for Atlético....
Willian José converted a penal-
ty to seal host Real Betis’s 3-2 win
over Rayo Vallecano....
Sevilla is in third place after it
beat visiting Levante, 5 -3.
l ITALY: Paulo Dybala re-
turned to rescue Juventus as it
snatched a 1-1 draw at Inter Milan
in the Derby d’Italia in Serie A.
Napoli’s perfect start to the sea-
son came to an end with a 0-0
draw at Roma....
Giovanni Simeone scored all
four goals as Hellas Verona routed
Lazio, 4-1....
Atalanta moved a point above
Lazio into fifth after it was held to
a 1-1 draw by Udinese....
Fiorentina moved up to sev-
enth with a comfortable 3-0 win
over relegation-threatened Cagli-
ari.
l FRANCE: Lionel Messi’s first
“Classique” ended in a 0-0 draw
between Marseille and 10-man
Paris Saint-Germain.
The stalemate reduced PSG’s
lead over Lens at t he top of Ligue 1
to seven points after 11 rounds....
Winger Wesley Said grabbed a
first-half brace as Lens beat Metz,
4-1....
Nice beat Lyon, 3-2, and is third
in the standings, two points be-
hind Lens....
Rennes enjoyed a 1 -0 home vic-
tory over Strasbourg....
Lorient and visiting Bordeaux
drew, 1-1....
Monaco beat Montpellier, 3-1,
at home....
Troyes won, 2-1, at Reims.
l GERMANY: Anthony Mod-
este scored twice to salvage a 2-2
draw for Cologne against Bayer
Leverkusen in the Bundesliga....
Ten-man Stuttgart scored a
last-minute equalizer to rescue a
1-1 draw with Union Berlin....
The pressure on Eintracht
Frankfurt Manager Oliver Glas-
ner increased with a 2-0 loss at
promoted Bochum.
l MLS: Sebastián Driussi
scored in first-half injury time,
and expansion Austin FC beat the
visiting Houston Dynamo, 2-1....
Adam Buksa scored two goals
in the closing minutes, and the
visiting New England Revolution
rallied to tie Orlando City, 2 -2, on a
rain-soaked night.
