The bidding:
“T
he man finally got hi s
due,” Unlucky Louie
told me.
Louie meant Harlow the
Halo, my club’s luckiest play-
er. His finesses always win
and his errors never cost.
“Harlow and I both played
at four spades in a team
match,” Louie said, “and
West led the queen of clubs.
Harlow won in dummy and
led a trump to his jack. His
finesse won, of course, but
when he took the ace, West
discarded. Harlow cashed
the king and started the dia-
monds, but his luck ran out.
East ruffed the third diamond
and led the queen of hearts.
Down one.
“My play was better,”
Louie said. “I couldn’t let
East win a trump trick to shift
to hearts, so I led a trump at
Trick Two — and played the
six when East followed with
the three. West won and led
another club, and I won, took
the ace of trumps, led to the
10 of diamonds, picked up
the trumps and ran the dia-
monds to pitch a heart.”
“Well done,” I said.
“Harlow’s luck couldn’t last
forever.”
“He’ll probably start a
new streak tomorrow,” Louie
sighed.

The dealer, at your right,
opens one club. You overcall
one spade, the next player
bids two clubs and two pass-
es follow. What do you say?
ANSWER: Don’t sell out
when the opponents have
found a trump fit but have
stopped low, and your
partner surely has a bit of
strength. Double. Since
partner has not acted, your
double is for takeout. He will
support your spades, bid a
red suit or (rarely) pass for
penalty.
