Selling With Emotional Intelligence : 5 Skills For Building Stronger Client Relationships

(sharon) #1

The Togetherness style is led by a sense of caring and constantly tries
to play the affirmer and encourager. Such people take a warm, personable
approach and strive to avoid offending others. They are by nature under-
standing and responsive listeners.
Togetherness people always try to show respect to others and expect
the same in return. They have their radar up for genuineness, sincerity,
and amiability—and tend to shy away from those who do not display these
characteristics.

Challenges

The Achilles heel of the Togetherness personality is the need to please
everyone. By Achilles heel, I mean an inherent characteristic of personality
that causes a high percentage of our personal stress and relational frustra-
tion. I know of one Enterpriser personality whose idea of a good practical
joke is to call a Togetherness friend at 9:00 PMand say that “so and so” is mad
at him. Because of his people-pleasing tendencies, the Togetherness per-
sonality won’t be able to sleep all night! Enterprisers, on the other hand,
would sleep like babies knowing someone was upset with them.
