The consumption of Ramyun also
reveals certain cultural meanings in
Korea. For example, Ramyun is often
used to overcome hangovers, also
known as haejang. As Koreans are the
second highest alcohol consumers in
the world, ramyun is a mael that they
enjoy at midnight or early morning to
decrease the impacts of alcohol
hangover. This is also often shown in
Korean dramas or movies.

With its differentiated concept
compared to other ramyun brands, Shin
Ramyun continued to propel forwards.
Undoubtedly, the unveiling of Shin
Ramyun increased Korea’s consumption
of Ramyun, with 70 - 90 packs of ramyun
per person each year, which adds up to
3. 3 billion packs for the entire
population of Korea. Except for
domestic demands, Shin ramyun even
started to export its product to foreign
countries, and this has been playing a
key role in spreading awareness of
Korea’s food culture to the world.

Ramyun, identified as Korean instant
noodles, was invented in the 1960 s as a
cheaper and accessible filler food to
save time. At that time, Samyang was
publicly recognized as the most
popular ramyun brand with the help of
Japan’s mechanical equipment. With
ramyun’s increasing popularity in
Korea, the market for ramyun expanded
into different corporations and brands.
Specifically, the founder of Nongshim,
Chun Ho Shin decided to experiment
with new soup flavours, one of them
being a red and spicy soup called Shin
Ramyun.

Shin Ramyun was launched in the
1980 s and it immediately changed the
old stereotype of ramyun, which is
“cheap but lacking in nutritional
values.” This is because the soup base
of Shin Ramyun includes “premium
spiciness with prime tasting beef,”
along with toppings such as Shiitake
mushrooms and dried green onions. The
texture of the noodles are also created
