Jungle passage

Migrant families make their way
through one of dozens of river
crossings in the Darién Gap along the
Colombia- Panama border on Oct. 18.
The Darién is a roadless, hilly, heavily
jungled region where Central America
meets South America, and traversing
it on foot is the most treacherous
section of a migrant’s journey north.
Of the 91,000 people the International
Organization for Migration estimates
have crossed the Darién this year,
a majority have been Haitians.
