HOW TO USE THIS LEADERSHIP TOOL
“Most people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
—John Maxwell
Inclusion, control, and affection can be understood very simply. Consider a group of people
going sailing on a Sunday afternoon. The inclusion issue is the decision to invite someone, and
that person’s decision to go or not go on the boat. The issue of control concerns who is navi-
gating, operating the sails, watching for hazards, working the rudder, and so on. Affection con-
cerns any close relationships that develop between people on the boat.

Use or adapt this framework to improve the levels of inclusion, control, and affection within
your workgroup or team. Ask each member to make a few notes in each row, and discuss these
in the workgroup or team. Members can then plan improvements together, acknowledging
and affirming what they are presently doing well, critiquing what they do least well and need
to do better, and developing strategies for improving the overall functioning of the workgroup
or team.
