For centuries, Chengdu has been known as ìThe Land of Abundanceî and the
center of western China. Its rich soil and frequent rainfall enabled agricultural
and handicraft industries to flourish there, providing food and tools for the whole
country. Today, Chengdu, with a history of more than 2,300 years as a city, has
fostered another industryóthe medical- and health-related industryóand now its
ambition is to benefit the whole world.
Today, Chengdu has 164 million outpatients per year and over 5 million people
working in the medical and health-related industry. To fulfill its goal of benefiting
humanity, Chengdu has built the Chengdu Tianfu International Bio-Town (CDBT),
which is located at the southern part of the city and has an area of 44 km^2 (17 mi^2 ).
From the air, CDBT looks like a garden, featuring lush patches of grass and dense
stands of trees. The idea of building the Bio-Town in a forest and building labs in a
garden is engraved in the cityís genes and stands as one of the many reasons why
Chengdu is known as one of most livable cities in China.
Along with the trees found there, projects incubated in CDBT also grow
steadily. In the past 3 years, CDBT has authorized about 150 projects, with a total
investment volume of over 110 billion CNY (17 billion USD).

Industrial chain as the foundation
Business is the basis of CDBTís development, and CDBT is endeavoring to build
a complete industrial chain.
CDBT focuses on developing five major fieldsóbiotechnology drugs,
innovative chemical entities, advanced medical equipment, professional
outsourcing services, and cutting-edge health care servicesóand 14 subfields,
including antibody drugs, cell and gene therapy, in vitro diagnostics, and
smart wearable devices. It has attracted more than 3,200 companies, including

AstraZeneca, Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Brilliant
Pharmaceuticals, and Maccura Biotechnology. Among them, eight companies,
including HitGen and Olymvax Biopharmaceuticals, are listed companies
that started in this area, and eight companies, including Westvac, are unicorn
companies.
In 2020, CDBT was rated no. 3 in a comprehensive ranking of Chinaís 169
medical- and health-related industrial parks, according to an industry report
issued by the China National Center for Biotechnology Development. As the
medical and health care industry is facing explosive growth, CDBT plans to realize
an industrial scale of 250 billion CNY (39 billion USD) by 2025.

Innovation-driven development: From labs to
industrialization
CDBTís innovation-driven development helps boost its growth in many ways.
It is Chinaís first Major Pilot Demonstration Base for New Drug Creation and
shoulders the national mission of solving the transfer and transformation of
innovative medical achievements.
Aware of the importance of working with scientists, CDBT values cooperating
with enterprises and institutes in China and around the world to encourage
innovation. It has teamed up with Thermo Fisher to establish the Thermo
Fisher Scientific Innovation Lab, and with Sichuan University to create the
Sichuan University Parallel Lab. Both labs provide enterprises with ready-to-use
equipment.
CDBT also innovates development models. It supports principal investigators
in transferring their intellectual property to the capital market, aiming at
fostering initial public offering companies.
