triumph. She has lost three of five
matches, two of them against oppo-
nents with three-digit rankings.
There is no cause for any panic,
though. A period of rest will serve
Raducanu well during the coming
weeks and allow her to take stock
before preparations begin for January’s
Australian Open.
This has been a whirlwind six
months for the teenager, who was
ranked outside the world’s top 300
before announcing herself at
Wimbledon with a thrilling run to the
last 16. Now she sits at a career-high
position of No 20.

situation has been resolved. Torben
Beltz has been appointed as Raducanu’s
coach for the new season after a sudden
split with Angelique Kerber, almost
three weeks after he was photographed
meeting Raducanu near her Bromley
home.
Raducanu had trialled different
coaches in her search for a replacement
for Andrew Richardson, and she has
settled on Beltz after Kerber, the former
world No 1, revealed on Monday that
she will no longer work with her long-
time mentor.
Beltz, 44, certainly fits the bill for
Raducanu, who has repeatedly said in
recent months that she is looking for an
experienced mentor to guide her in her
early steps on the WTA Tour. He
helped Kerber to win two of her three
grand-slam titles, at the Australian
Open and US Open in 2016. He also
spent three years working with the

former top-20 player Donna Vekic, of
Croatia.
Raducanu and Beltz will start
working together later this month. The
pair have targeted the off-season as a
key period to work on both physical and
technical elements in her game.
“It’s obviously a great privilege to be
working with such an experienced
coach,” Raducanu said. “I am definitely
very excited to work with him
throughout the pre-season and into
next year.
“He’s worked with such a great player
[Kerber] who has done extremely well
and won three slams. I think that
experience definitely helps with
someone as inexperienced as me, so he
can help guide me through. He is a
really positive and cheerful guy, who
brings great energy to the team, which
I think is also important when you are
travelling on the road for quite a long
time on the tour.”
Without a coach in her corner
yesterday, Raducanu lacked a coherent
strategy in the early stages and made
too many errors against the powerful
Wang, 20, a former junior world No 2,
who had already won three matches
in Linz after coming through qualify-
ing.
Meanwhile, Andy Murray made a
successful start to his final event of the
year, defeating the Norwegian qualifier
Viktor Durasovic 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) in the
first round of the Stockholm Open. It
sets up an intriguing second-round
encounter today against the 20-year-
old Italian star Jannik Sinner. Raducanu’s breakthrough season ended with a second-round loss at the Linz Open.

A season that Emma Raducanu will
never forget has ended on a painful
note after the 18-year-old suffered a
spasm in her right leg during a second-
round defeat by the world No 106,
Wang Xinyu, at the Linz Open.
This was not the way Raducanu had
hoped to round off a year in which she
became a grand-slam champion at the
US Open. Not only was the British No 1
and top seed outplayed by a lower-
ranked opponent in a 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 7-5
loss over the course of two hours and 36
minutes, but she left the court with a
limp after jarring her leg on the indoor
hard surface.
Raducanu received treatment on the
area around her hip from a tournament
medic after dropping her serve to go 5-4
down in the deciding set. Admirably she
battled hard by breaking back for 5-5
but her movement was clearly hindered
and she lost the next two games.
“I’m going to see the physio,”
Raducanu said afterwards. “I am proud
of the way I fought to get back into the
match.”
No doubt it was unfair of the England
rugby union head coach, Eddie Jones,
to claim that Raducanu had been
affected by off-court distractions in
recent months, but ultimately it is hard
to argue against the point that she has
not done well since her US Open
