‘Jones’s negative comments

show rugby has to change’

insisting that her head has not been
turned by commercial commitments.
“I think that many people are going
to have opinions of me and what I’m
doing,” Raducanu, 18, said. “I just know
I’m staying focused with a small circle
around me. I have my parents, who
would 100 per cent let me know if I was
getting swayed. I am very zoned in.”
Yormark believes Jones’s comments
are typical of an attitude that has
prevented rugby’s growth. Roc Nation,
which also represents Siya Kolisi, the
South Africa captain, has moved into
the sport recently, partnering with the
United Rugby Championship, with a
determination to broaden the
game’s appeal and move it into
new markets.
“The negative comments
that surfaced over the weekend
is exactly the reason why
rugby needs to change,”
Yormark posted on
Instagram. “What was
said is indicative of the
traditional approach that
still exists in the sport. If
this continues and it’s
frowned upon for players
to pursue the off-field
opportunities that they’ve
earned, which will only
benefit the sport, it won’t be
long until the players stand
up and fight against the
existing system.
“As a sports enthusi-
ast before anything
else, I feel that I have
a moral obligation to
stand up against what

happened this weekend and will con-
tinue to fight for the players, because
they deserve better.” Yormark’s com-
ments were given the seal of approval
by Kolisi’s wife, Rachel, and Tendai
Mtawarira, the former South Africa
prop, also a Roc Nation client.
After Smith gave an eye-catching
performance in England’s victory over
Tonga at the weekend, Jones warned
him about the dangers that lay ahead,
saying that Raducanu “hasn’t done so
well” since winning the US Open as a
qualifier in September.
Yormark sprung to Raducanu’s de-
fence. “It’s not usually my place to come
out publicly and comment on media
topics,” he said. “However, I find
myself unable to ignore what
was said over the weekend
about [Raducanu] by a highly
influential member of the
rugby community.
“During the summer,
Emma stole the hearts
of many people from
around the world with
her unexpected and
unprecedented US
Open victory. She is
both an inspiration
and role model —
showing us that with
talent, hard work and
consistency anything is
possible. Emma, con-
gratulations on all of
your successes, and
continue to dream big
and dare to fail.”

Rachel Kolisi voiced
her approval of
Yormark’s comments
