LEFT: Netsuke, the devices used to attach pouches
or other objects to the belt of a Japanese robe,
were often elaborately carved. This one represents
Bodhidharma, semilegendary first patriarch of the
Chan school of Buddhism, during his nine-year-
long seated meditation. He is shown sitting—his
legs having fallen off—on a flyswatter. Japanese,
nineteenth century, carved ivory. Copyright The
British Museum. Reproduced by permission.
BELOW: The Chinese recension of the Lotus Sutra
(Saddharmapundarlka-sutra). The borders are
ornamented with gold and silver foil, and the
entire scroll is sprinkled with gold dust. Japanese,
Kamakura period (1185–1333), ca. 1240–1280,
block printing on paper scroll. The British Library.
