edgestartedat an earlyage aftertakinga
correspondencecourseon radios.During
high-school,he was aHAM radio operator
and workedat alocalradio stationas an
engineer.Servingin the Navy,1940-45,
as aradiotechnicianhe wasrecognized
for his abilitiesandreceivedadditional
educationwhichincludedlearningradar.
AfterWWII,Deweyworkedfor the US
WeatherBureauand movedto Washington
DC withhis wifeand two smallchildren.
In 1957,usingthe radar technologythat
he learnedduringthe war,Deweydesigned
and implementedthe firstnationalradar
systemin the weatherbureau,WSR-57.
Thiswasthe mainweathersurveillance
for over35 years,precedingwhatwe now
knowas Doppler.After retiringfromthe
DODin 1972he startedaPiper flightschool
teachingmanyhowto fly.Deweyand the
love of his life,Betty Newsome,frequently
flewbackandforthto Floridaas true
snowbirds.Deweycontinuedto fly untilhe
was 90 and drivinguntil 100.
If you wereto ask Deweywhathis biggest
accomplishmentwas,hewouldtell you
that it was marryingthe love of his life.He
saidthattheyweretwo youngkidswho
madeit on theirown.
Bettypassedin 2012but therewasn'ta
day thathe wasn'tthinkingof her.Their
love is the kind you only see in the movies
perhapsbecausethosemenof that gener-
ationknewhow to love.

Instituteof Architectsaward.
Seikowasdeeplyinvolvedin the Christ
Churchcommunity,and she also workedat
the RouseCompany.While livingin Columbia,
Seikoreceivedher master’sdegreefromthe
Universityof Baltimore.She thentaught
Japanesein anumberof areacolleges,high
schoolsand middleschools.Followingretire-
ment,they rentedan RV and traveledaround
the countryvisitingfamilyand friends.
Theyspentmostof everysummerat their
cottagein WeymouthNorth,NovaScotia
whichtheyloved.Jim’smotherboughtthe
cottageand introducedJim to NovaScotiaas
ayoungboy.
Jim and Seikomovedto aretirementcom-
munityin Sykesville,MDwheretheyhappily
livedfor anumberof yearsand thenmoved
in with theirson ayear and ahalf ago.
Jim and Seikosharedmanyinterestsinclud-
ing bird watching,travelingand theirdogs
and cats.Jim lovedclassicalmusicand had
an extensivecollectionof CDs.Hewas a
voraciousreaderof bothbiographiesand
mysteries.Seikowas an avidphotographer,
gardenerandwasalwaysexercisingand
walking.She also researchedand compiled
an extensivegenealogyof Jim’sMaryland
family,the Janneys,becauseshe foundthem
so fascinating.

Shields.Marriedin 1955in Japan,Seikomet
Jim whenshe workedas an Englishtranslator
for the hospitalcommanderat CampZuma,
the US ArmybasenearTokyo whereJim
was an U.S. ArmyOperatingRoomSpecialist.
Theyare survivedby theirson SamuelMark
Shieldsof Baltimore,MDand theirgrandson
JesseRandolfShieldsof Beaufort,SC.Also
several nieces,nephewsand cousins.
Afterlivingin Fort Hamilton,NY and Munich,
Germanyas Jim continuedhis Armyservice,

degree,Andrewwentinto privatepracticeat
Howrey&Simon,wherehe workedin the
antitrustgroup.
In 1993,Andrewand Loriereturnedto Min-
nesotawherehe workedon manypolitical
campaigns,held variousstaff positionsat the
statelegislatureand workedfor SheriffRich
Stanekin HennepinCounty.His accolades
includedLegislativeStaffPersonof the Year
and recipientof the HennepinCountySher-
iff’sAwardof Merit.Andrewalso becamean
avidboosterof GopherWomen’sAthletics,
particularlytheWomen’sSoftballteam.
Whilebuilding his ownpoliticalcareer,
AndrewproudlypartneredwithLorieas she
rosethroughthe ranks of the Minnesota
Judiciary,most notablystandingby her side
at her investitureas the ChiefJusticeof the
MinnesotaSupremeCourtin 2010.His love
for Lorieknewno bounds.Hedescribedit
besthimselfwhenhe said,“she’sthe best

electedHomecomingKing and StudentBody
Presidentat PeninsulaHighSchoolin Gig
Harbor,Washington,wherehe also became
aNationalMeritScholar.Hewas amulti-
seasonathleteand Captainof Peninsula’s
varsitywaterpolo,swimmingand football
teams.Andrewproudlyattendedthe Univer-
sity of Virginiawherehe joinedthe editorial
boardof the CavalierDaily.Itwas there
he sharpenedhis encyclopedicknowledgeof
sportsstaticsand history.
AftergraduatingfromUVA, Andrewjoined
the staffof the RepublicanNationalCom-
mittee,wherehis passionfor politicsand
