Synoptic situation
A ridge of high pressure will
extend across the British Isles
from central Europe, leading to
a mostly dry day over England,
Wales and Scotland with sunny
intervals after any fog or drizzle
has cleared. Low pressure to
the west of Ireland will push
a complex set of fronts across
Ireland and western Scotland,
bringing thick cloud and
outbreaks of rain.

‘T
he sky is falling down!”
shouted Chicken Licken. And
the chicken’s fear has almost
become fact because the Earth’s
upper atmosphere is contracting and
lowering. At the same time, the
lowest layer of the atmosphere
where our weather happens — the
troposphere — is expanding and
rising higher. This paradox is a truly
global result of climate change.
The troposphere is warming as
greenhouse gases trap more heat,
and so this thin layer of atmosphere
expands and rises higher. A study,
published in Science Advances this
month, found that it had risen an
average of 200m in height over 40
years, from 1980 to 2020, even
though natural events also have an
influence, such as volcanic
eruptions, and El Niño and La Niña.
Chicken Licken’s fear of the sky
falling down plays out in the
atmosphere higher up. The
stratosphere lies above the
troposphere at about 20km to 60km
above the Earth’s surface. As the
troposphere expands it has been
pushing up on the stratosphere, and
yet the stratosphere has been
contracting because it has been
cooling over the past four decades.
Nasa satellites also revealed that
the mesosphere, the high
atmosphere near the edge of space,
is cooling and contracting at about
150m to 200m each decade.
“Down near Earth’s surface, the
atmosphere is thick,” said Dr James
Russell, co-director of the Center for
Atmospheric Sciences at Hampton
University, Virginia. “Carbon
dioxide traps heat just like a quilt
traps your body heat.”
In the lower atmosphere there are
plenty of gas molecules, so they
easily trap and transfer Earth’s heat
between each other, keeping the
atmosphere warm. But when Earth’s
heat makes it higher up, to the
thinner upper atmosphere, there are
fewer gas molecules there and any
heat captured by carbon dioxide
soon escapes into space. Increases in
greenhouses gases like carbon
dioxide mean more heat is lost to
space and it cools. When air cools it
contracts, much like a balloon
shrinking when it is put in a freezer.
