Art by Nek Chand
at the Art Preserve
MOVIE NIGHT
A
collection of 40 artist-built environments are
on display in a new museum called the Art
Preserve. It is part of the John Michael Kohler Arts
Center (JMKAC) in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It
opened in June and has more than 25,000 works.
The Art Preserve is the world’s fi rst museum
dedicated to the presentation and study of art
environments. “An artist-built environment is a
space an artist completely transforms, often times
their home or yard, by fi lling it with objects they
make or collect,” Xoe Fiss, JMKAC’s education
program director, told The Week Junior. The artists
often use materials that are easily found, such as
concrete, glass, or stone. The environments are
inspired by an artist’s culture, surroundings, and
expansive imagination.
One popular space at Art Preserve is “Beautiful
Holy Jewel Home.” It is a house, clothing, and
furniture covered with glitter and rhinestones. It
was made by Loy Bowlin, who calls himself the
“original rhinestone cowboy.” Another area is
fi lled with more than 100 creatures carved by Levi
Fisher Ames in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
“Making things by hand can be magical,” Fiss said.
“I fi nd endless inspiration for what humans can
create by exploring the Art Preserve collections.”
