New Zealand
Bat beats birds
A very rare and tiny bat has won
New Zealand’s annual Bird of the
Year competition. Because there
are only two bat species native
to New Zealand, the organizers
did not want to create a separate
competition just for bats. Some
people on social media have
questioned the bat’s inclusion
in a bird competition. However,
the long-tailed, thumb-sized bat,
known as the pekapeka-tou-roa,
won by 3,000 votes.
