Tally-ho! It ’s the
Sandringham gilet
The word gilet has long struck fear into
the hearts of fashion editors. But no
more! The unofficial uniform for
shooting weekends and winter hols in
Sandringham is creeping on to the
catwalk — and the high street. The global
fashion shopping platform Lyst reports
that searches for quilted jackets and gilets
are up 61 per cent month-on-month. The
Princess Royal and the Duchess of
Cambridge are, of course, firmly
team gilet. (Best worn with
wellies, a tweed flat cap and
a private education.) The usual
category leaders in Brit preppy
wear — Barbour, Boden, Joules
— will have you covered, but
for a more modern update look
to the cult New York label
Frankie Shop. Fans of the
brand include JLo and Gigi
Hadid, and the quilted vests
and jackets frequently sell out.

Cheers to the mulled
wine makeover
Yes, sommeliers who were once horrified
by the thought of a melted cab sauv are
starting to get on board with winter’s most
divisive beverage. Instagram’s favourite
bottle shop, Top Cuvée, has just
relaunched its “actually nice” mulled wine
(£17, left) after sellout success when it
debuted last year, and posh bars and pubs
such as Mr Fogg’s Tavern, Publiq and the Sun Tavern in
London are also doing their own limited-edition spins on
the drink. The perfect base, according to Luca Dusi,
a co-founder of Passione Vino, the Shoreditch wine bar
and shop, is an Italian red. “Puglia primitivo, Sicilian nero
d’Avola or Sardinian cannonau give the finest results.” The
key spices: cloves, cinnamon sticks, orange zest, lemon
zest. For a fancy version Dusi recommends adding star
anise, cardamom, apple skin and pink peppercorns. Top
tips: mull on the lowest setting on the smallest burner of
your hob at 50-60C for about an hour. Make sure the lid
stays on between serves or the wine will reduce and
become too concentrated. And skip the sugar — port, sloe
gin or Toki whisky are a far more elegant way to bring out
sweetness. And Dusi adds a shot of brandy to his. Yum.
