Remember that guy? Simon Rex
In the golden age of paparazzi in the early 2000s Simon Rex was
the guy in every “falling out of a club at 3am” shot. Thanks to an
on-off relationship with Paris Hilton and regular spots on
the party circuit with Lindsay Lohan et al, he became
one of the It boys of the time. Later there was a pivot to
rapper and actor, but he never quite found critical
success. (The films on his Rotten Tomatoes page
have an average 13 per cent rating. Shocked that
Shriek If You Know W hat I Did Last Friday the
13th was overlooked for the Oscar.) But prepare
for a mega career makeover. The indie director
Sean Baker (The Florida Project, Tangerine)
handpicked Rex, now 47, to be the lead in his
new film, Red Rocket, which received rapturous
reviews on the film festival circuit and
a standing ovation at Cannes. Rex plays Mikey
Saber, a washed-up LA porn star returning to
his Texan home town, and has already been
nominated for an award for the role. Up next: he has
been cast in a blockbuster comedy with Diane Keaton
and another indie flick, co-written by Lukas Gage
(that bellboy from The W hite Lotus). Welcome back!
They’re back:
wraparound
sunglasses
Usually better suited to the
velodrome than the catwalk,
wraparound sunglasses are having
an unexpected fashion moment.
Insiders report that Oakley’s Radar
EV Path style has been one of
the most popular searches in
menswear this year. (At least
it’s not last year’s micro
sunglasses movement.) Tod’s,
Balmain, Rick Owens and
Roberto Cavalli all recently
featured wraparounds. Sun
protection from peripheral
light never looked so chic!
