ODONTOMES
Odontomes are hamartomas that contain dental calcified tissue. They are classified as
compound (a collection of discrete tooth-like structures) and complex (a haphazard
arrangement of dental tissue). Compound odontomes are most commonly found in
the anterior maxilla (1037HFig. 15.19). The complex type are usually located in the
premolar/ molar regions of both jaws. Odontomes are usually symptomless and are
diagnosed radiographically. The mean age of patients at diagnosis is 15 years.
