Variations in personal endings

When the stem of an irregular verb in the simple past ends in -d,

-s/ss/ßor-t, an additional -eis added to the duform and sometimes also

theihrform:

finden → fand du fandest ihr fandet

beißen biss du bissest ihr bisset

sitzen saß du saßest ihr saßt

reiten ritt du rittest ihr rittet

schneiden schnitt du schnittest ihr schnittet

Note that these duandihrforms are often replaced with the present

perfect tense:

Fandest du dein Telefonbuch?

→Hast du dein Telefonbuch gefunden?

Saßet ihr in der ersten Reihe?

→Habt ihr in der ersten Reihe gesessen?

Mixed verbs and modal verbs

Mixed verbs

There are verbs called mixed verbsthat have a stem vowel change but

take the endings of regular verbs. The most common of these are:
