NaNoWriMo
NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel
Writing Month. This organization began in
1999 as a challenge for people to write
50,000 words of their own novel in the
month of November. The challenge was so
successful that the group now supports
the benefi ts of writing year-round all over
the world. It works with libraries and
authors and has a network of
more than 900 volunteers. Learn

CHARITY OF THE WEEK

Editor’s note

This week we are excited to
announce our second annual
cover contest (p25). Children
across the country are invited
to draw a cover of The Week
Junior that represents their “Wish
for the World.” The winning drawing will appear
on the cover of Issue 89 (dated December 24).
We hope you’ll consider entering! Last year more
than 1,000 kids sent in their drawings. The
creativity was incredible, and choosing a winner
was nearly impossible! This year we are thrilled
to welcome three amazing children’s book
creators to our judging panel: Je Kinney, creator
of the Wimpy Kid series; Remy Lai, author of
Pawcasso; and Maria Scrivan, creator of the Nat
Enough books. I know they are just as eager to
see the submissions as we are. The deadline to
enter the contest is November 28.

IT’S YOUR TURN

My family and I participated
in a fundraiser race called The
Terry Fox Run. Terry Fox was a
Canadian hero who ran across
Canada with an amputated leg
because he had cancer. He was
only 18 when he decided to raise
enough money to cure cancer, but
he passed away before he was
able to fi nish. Now every year
people gather to raise money
and awareness in memory of Terry.
This year the race was especially
important to our family because our
grandmother was diagnosed with
cancer. We are proud to have raised
$750, the most money that we have
ever produced.
